ELDERFLOWER SPARKLING WINE FAQ

All of your sparkling wine questions answered by Renegade and Longton’s experts. Learn how to make your sparkling wine last longer, what makes a vegan sparkling wine vegan, and how to order elderflower sparkling wines by the case for your next big get together.

WHAT IS ELDERFLOWER AND WHY DO YOU USE IT?

Elderflower is a white flower blossom from the elderberry tree. It has been a staple in British food and drink for centuries and is commonly used in the production of alcohols like gin.

Elderflower infuses a light floral taste to our sparkling wines rather than the sweetness commonly found with grapes, and we prefer it that way. The result is a dry, low-sugar sparkling wine with subtle notes and tastes of elderflower.

HOW LONG DOES AN OPENED BOTTLE OF SPARKLING WINE LAST?

If kept refrigerated and properly sealed, an open bottle of our Elderflower Sparkling Wine can last between 3-5 days. If you don’t have the cork, you can also use regular wine stopper to help seal the opening and keep the bubbles for longer.

WHAT IS THE CHAMPAGNE PROCESS?

Renegade and Longton uses the traditional champagne method to produce our elderflower sparkling wines. We just add a healthy dose of rebellion to the process, switching grapes for elderflower and adding in additional ingredients to create our Elderflower Blush.

The champagne method originated in the  Champagne Region of France and dates back to the Medieval times. it involves the following steps:

  1. Press
  2. First fermentation
  3. Assemblage (blending grapes from vinyards)
  4. Second fermentation in the bottle
  5. Remuage (removing sediment)
  6. Aging
  7. Disgorgement
  8. Dosage

In order for a product to be called ‘champagne’ it must have been created in a specific region of northern France, and the second fermentation must have taken place in the bottle.

Since Renegade and Longton’s products are proudly made in Britain, we’ll stick to calling our products sparkling wines. Plus we don’t want to get sued.

HOW MUCH SUGAR IS IN ELDERFLOWER SPARKLING WINES?

Sparkling wines that are considered dry, or bruts can have between 6-12g of sugar per bottle. Regengade and Longton’s elderflower sparkling wines are on the dry side of this spectrum, with only 6g of sugar per bottle or roughly 1g of sugar per serving. We make all of our wines deliciously dry because we believe it tastes better that way.

ARE YOUR SPARKLING WINES VEGAN?

Yes, we’re happy to let you know that all of our sparkling wines are vegan so they can be enjoyed by everyone (of legal drinking age).

Our elderflower sparkling wines are vegan as a result of the process we use to handcraft them. We use a clay-based fining agent during our fining process – a step that comes after fermentation to remove impurities and give wines more clarity. Non-vegan wines will use animal by-products as fining agents to complete this step, but we prefer to keep animal bits out of our winemaking process.

All of our wines are manufactured by the same producer, so you can rest assured that 100% of our wines are vegan and there isn’t any annoying fine print to watch out for.
